Home People Research Research Publications Teaching Protocol Sharing News Center for Pain Medicine Research Brief Info Software Alumni Join us Contact us Zhongmin Liu Assistant Professor Department of Immunology and Microbiology Dr. Liu obtained his Bachelor's degree in Medicine from Nanchang University in 2009, finished his Ph.D. at Peking University in 2015, then joined Hongwei Wang's group as a postdoc at Tsinghua University. Since 2020, Dr. Liu has been employed at the School of Life Sciences at Southern University of Science and Technology; Dr. Liu was honored as Shenzhen Pengcheng Peacock Scholar and the Pearl River Talents (Young Top Talent) of Guangdong Province. As the first author or corresponding author, he has published several works in top journals, including Cell, Nature Chemical Biology, Nature Communications, PNAS、Protein&Cell, and other authoritative international journals. Personal Profile Personal Profile Research Our group applies multidisciplinary techniques such as cryo-Electron Microscopy, liquid-liquid separation, biochemistry, molecular biology, and cell biology to do cutting-edge biomedical research. Our lab has two main research directions: (1) The homeostasis of Stress Granules and their functions in innate immunity: the stress granules will be formed after cells suffer from variant stimulators, such as drugs, viruses, heat, cold, and other factors. The stress granule is identified as a nonmembrane organelle comprising a large amount of ribonucleoprotein, RNA, and other molecules that are liquid-liquid phase separated in the cytosol. We will explore the structures and functions of proteins and RNAs in stress granules and reveal their impact on SG homeostasis and finally determine their roles in innate immunity. (2) The working mechanism of transmembrane transporters: Membrane transporters translocate numerous substrates, such as cytokines, amino acids, nucleotides, inorganic ions, and drugs, across the membrane through hydrolyzing ATP moles; thus, membrane transporters are potential targets for drug development. The unique structural features of each membrane transporter directly specify its substrate. We will study the working mechanisms of disease-related membrane transporters, providing a structural basis for subsequent drug design.
