Jia-Long Yao

Dr. Yao received his BSc in Agricultural Sciences from Huazhong Agricultural University in 1983 and PhD in Plant Biology and Biotechnology from Massey University in 1993. He was appointed as a Scientist at the Horticulture and Food Research Institute of New Zealand Ltd in 1993, leading the apple transformation and fruit development research projects. Then he joined Genesis Research and Development Corporation Ltd as a Senior Staff Scientist and group leader in 2001 to study molecular mechanisms regulating wood fiber development. Since 2008, he has served as a Senior Scientist at the New Zealand Institute for Plant and Food Research.  His research has been focused on developing efficient genetic transformation systems for tree species and analyzing gene function using these transformation systems and modern genomics tools.  His team have identified genes controlling fruit size, shape, seedlessness, and texture, and genes controlling cambium and xylem development and wood quality.
